Darrel Eccles, age 74, of 1922 Carroll Street, passed away May 10, 2013, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Central Christian Church with Rev. Gary Sneller officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Park Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council.
Darrel was born in Boone on August 23, 1938, the son of Gaylord and Opal (Fisher) Eccles.
He graduated from Boone High School in 1956 and served with the United States Army from 1961 to 1967.
Darrel married Joyce Thrap in Boone on April 8, 1961.
Darrel worked as a surveyor for Lechner Engineering in Ames from 1956 to 1974.
He then worked for the City of Boone as a technician at the water treatment plant from 1974 to 2000 when he retired.
Following retirement, he was a driver for Farley’s Limousine Service.
Darrel enjoyed cooking, baking, making popcorn balls, woodworking, attending auctions, and spending time with his dog Patch. He especially enjoyed attending his grandsons’ sports events.
Darrel coached and umpired Little League, was an active member of the Boone Booster Club, and operated the scoreboard for girls softball.
He also surveyed the land for the Boone Little League Park.
He loved attending class reunions.
Darrel received a Volunteer Award from Governor Chet Culver for volunteer reading at Lincoln Elementary School’s first grade class.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Richard.
Darrel is survived by his wife Joyce of Boone; a son Jeff Eccles and wife Lynn of Farmington, Minnesota; a daughter Kari Frost and husband David of Boone; a sister Joanne Hunter and husband Bill of Newton; two grandsons, Mason and Tanner Frost of Boone; and a sister-in-law Glenda Eccles of Ogden.
Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Tuesday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m.
Visitation on Wednesday will be at the Church from 10 a.m. until service time.
