Rob passed on from this life on April 26, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. At the time of his accident, Rob was farming – his lifelong joy – and surrounded by friends.
Robert George Wilson was born in Jefferson, Iowa on September 10, 1971. He was the third child and first son of Robert Eugene and Ellen Marie (Nahnsen) Wilson.
Rob spent his childhood in Paton, IA and always loved to play on his Green Machine big wheels with his best friend Andy. He always enjoyed playing with his sisters Vicki and Debbie swimming in the back yard pool and vacations and time spent with the Hicks family. Even as a child, Rob was always determined to get to the races – going as far as driving a tractor to town to hitch a ride to the next race.
One of 27 students in the Paton-Churdan High School class of ’90, Rob enjoyed his days with these close friends. One of these friends, Shawn Mackey, perfectly summed up the bond this class shared. “We all went through childhood together, got in trouble together, partied together, and played sports together. Sure we had a few bad times but I always remember the good times. In the bad times, we always have each other’s back. Even if we have disagreements it was always resolved and forgotten quickly. Nothing beats the bond of friendship like we have growing up in small towns. Life is short and today we lost one of our brothers.”
After high school, Rob was very active with many of his hobbies. He particularly enjoyed his work with Sprint Car Racing. “Slim”, as he was known to his racing friends, spent countless hours in the pits with the rest of the crew working and cheering on his friends. The drivers he worked with through those years were Matt Fox, Steve Bietler, Breezy Whitworth, and Travis Cram. They forged friendships to last a lifetime. In recent years, Rob worked on the stock car owned by George Walker and driven by Matt Fox. Friday nights at Ft. Dodge were always an entertaining time for the team and Rob’s quick humor and big laughs were shared by everyone.
In the summer of 1999, Rob met Heather Jennings and they were married on March 18, 2000. The newlyweds lived in Lohrville, IA for six years during which time they welcomed their first son Brandon Kinser and their second son Derek John. In 2006, Rob and family moved to the family farm where they lived and worked for two years and welcomed their youngest son, Matthew Eugene. In 2008, the Wilsons moved to their current home in Paton, IA.
Rob built a career in agriculture and had a passion for farming. He spent 15 years working for Herman and Randy Seil where he built lasting friendships. In 2006, he went to work for Paul Mears where he spent his days enjoying the variety he found at Mears Seed and Chemical operation.
During his spare time, Rob had a wide variety of hobbies and activities he enjoyed. He took several trips to Pittsburg where he watched his favorite NFL team, the Pittsburg Steelers – the only team with 6 NFL Championships, which Rob made sure everyone remembered! Rob also enjoyed traveling with family and cherished the time they spent on cruises, family road trips, and annual pilgrimages to see the Iowa Hawkeyes play.
Rob was also an avid outdoorsman. Hunting and fishing with friends filled his summers and autumns with happy memories. During winter, Rob especially loved spending time with his group of snowmobiling friends. This year the group took a trip to Wisconsin that Rob later said was one of the best times of his life. In warmer weather, he enjoyed spending time on the 4-wheeler with his boys and Matt Fox going for rides around the Paton area. In the past couple years, Rob even tried his hand at golf. The highlight of the golfing may have been popping wheelies in the golf carts, but either way, the sport was time well spent with friends.
Rob touched many lives and will be missed by all.
