Richard Arthur Poston, 81, of Newton passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in Arkansas while doing what he loved: traveling with his wife.

The son of Harold and Dorthy (Buttrey) Poston, Richard was born July 13, 1931, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He grew up in Iowa. Richard was a Korean War veteran, having served in the Army Air Force from 1948 to 1952. He was proud to have served his country and was a lifetime member of both the American Legion and the VFW.

Richard worked at Maytag Corporation for 38 years. On Nov. 28, 1978, he married Gail Metz.

Richard was Past Commander of Masonic Lodge, Honorary Eminant Grand Treasurer for the State of Iowa Masons and Past Commander of American Legion. He also was on the firing squad for the American Legion and was involved in many community fundraisers and activities in both Iowa and Texas.

He loved traveling, fishing, spending time in his winter home in Texas, playing cards and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert Poston; his sister, Jeanne Cox; and a son, Dennis Fields.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 35 years, Gail Poston; his children, Rick (Denise) Poston of Des Moines, Teresa Byers of Denver, Colo., Mike Poston of Newton, John (Lee) Metz of Omaha, Neb., Tom (Colby) Metz of Newton and Jim, Loren and Bob Fields; his grandchildren, Jennifer Adams, Richard Poston, Summer Findley, Jason Byers, Sandra Poston, Kimberly Poston, Beth Pyle, Heather McMullen, Jaime Fields, Jennifer Fields, John Fields, Jason Fields, Britney Fields and Daniel Fields; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many friends.

A celebration of life service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the American Legion in Newton. Lunch will be served by the La Femmes Cabane 283.

Memorials to the American Legion or the Jasper County Freedom Flight will be accepted.
