The 13th Annual Friends of St. Thomas Aquinas Ball is set for Saturday, May 4, at the church’s Parish Center on Des Moines Street from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. The event’s objective is to raise funds for St. Thomas Aquinas School. This year’s goal is $140,000.
The evening starts off with a silent auction, followed by the live auction in the gym, and later a dance. Throughout the evening, there are hors d’oeuvres and dessert items to sample, as well as a cash bar.
The theme this year is, “Masquerade Ball.” Masks are encouraged, but optional.
“People can come in their masks at 6 p.m. for the hors d’oeuvres and silent auction, and remove them at 7 p.m. to enjoy the sit-down dinner,” explains ball committee member Jenny Maharry. The theme and sit-down dinner are new this year.
“We decided to try some new things to make it more interesting,” she says. “The buffet dinner will include two meats, three salads, a potato and a vegetable; Second Street Emporium and Leon’s are working together on the dinner, and Hy-Vee will do the appetizers and desserts.”
Maharry says items included in the auction are varied and include several Iowa State and Iowa fan items, along with the popular themed baskets put together by each class at the school. Music for the dance will be provided by a DJ from In-Your-Ear Mobile Sound.
A sneak preview of the auction items will take place as the St. Thomas Ball Committee hosts the Chamber Business After Hours Wine and Cheese Preview on Friday, May 3, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Parish Center. This will give potential bidders the chance to look over the auction items and put in a bid before the ball the next evening.
Tickets for the ball are limited and must be purchased in advance; they are $50 each or two complimentary with a donation of $300 or more. Grand prize raffle tickets are $50 each or three for $125. Prizes include first prize, $10,000 cash; second prize, a 55-inch LG 3-D TV with four pairs of 3-D glasses, a sound bar and a Blu-Ray player; and third prize, $1,000 in SCRIP gift cards of the winner’s choice.
