Kent Wendell Hedges Sr., age 74, of Ankeny and formerly of Scranton passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.
A visitation will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Ankeny on Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Scranton United Methodist Church where friends may call from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service. Rev. Charles Thompson will officiate. Organist for the service will be Mrs. Martha Wolf . Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Paul Buchanan, Dan Fliger, Larry Meredith, Kent Mac Donald, Mike Kulick, Harold Seaman. Honorary casket bearers will be Sid Vanderploeg, Bill (Dutch) Verheul, Fred Bergama, Dale Hoyt, Randy Hedges, Paul Bartley.
Born on December 26, 1938 at Jefferson, Iowa, he was the son of Wanyne and Jean (Capel) Hedges. He grew up on his family’s farm south of Scranton and graduated from Bayard High School in 1957. He then attended Morningside College in Sioux City and earned a bachelor’s degree in business. He was married to Donna Kay (Becky) Beckner on June 21, 1959 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Following college Kent taught High School in Glidden for a year and a half and then moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1964 and worked for U.S. Borax as a chemical sales representative. In 1969 they moved to Ankeny where he worked for Chemagro until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Scranton. He was a member of the Glidden Masonic Lodge , the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, a charter member of Northern Polk County Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Ankeny Rotary Club. Kent enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, traveling, reading, flying, and his two dogs Skeeter and Chipper.
Kent is survived by a daughter Julie Letze and her husband Larry of Runnells, Iowa; a son Kent Hedges II and his wife Patricia of Cambridge, Maryland; his mother Jean Hedges of Scranton; a sister Jan Reever and her husband Rich of Fairfield, Iowa; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a son-in-law Howie Burrows of Ankeny; a niece Renee Olson and her husband Mark of Boulder City, Nevada, a nephew Jason Reever and his wife Roni of Clear Water, Minnesota, several cousins, and many good friends.
