There’s a lot going on downtown, whether it be working out, reaching out or traveling to a different country.

St. John’s Lutheran Church has started up another session of Zumba classes going through May 6. They are every Monday in the third floor multi-purpose room from 5 – 5:45 p.m. All ages are welcome, and there’s no cost. Guests are encouraged to bring friends.

Looking for something a little more relaxed? St. John’s Lutheran is also beginning a seven-week session of yoga starting April 4. Classes are held every Thursday from 5:45 – 6:45 p.m. The cost is $10 per class.

Corinthian Baptist Church shows you don’t have to be in a church to worship. On the fourth Sunday of every month, it holds a worship service at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville.

This is only part of their Prison Ministry program. It also provides Bible study and Christian education classes twice a month for the women. Since the women can’t leave the institution, Corinthian Baptist goes so far as to perform baptisms in the prison. Corinthian Baptist also works with various half-way facilities for women and men by collecting personal items and clothing to donate.

Anyone who wants to help spread the Lord’s word, as well as experience something new, might want to consider going on a mission trip this year. On March 15, The Downtown Church sent another group to the Dominican Republic for a mission trip through March 30.

The church has been sending people there for three years. It also works with other churches to send a group about every other month. Anyone can apply to go, and each group member raises its own money for the trip.

Women at First United Methodist Church are looking to relax and connect with other women at their Cozy Mountain Lodge retreat on March 23. They will head down to Camp Wesley Woods outside of Indianola, where the ladies will begin their journey with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. There will be various activities such as a Bible study of the Book of Ruth as well as an outreach project, putting together soup mixes to donate to a food pantry.
