Tasty and healthy

There’s something about dining on Chinese food that always makes me feel good about what I’m eating. With abundant vegetable choices, I can count on a meal that’s healthy and fresh.

For our first visit to the Rice House off Highway 18, my dining companion and I found selections of Chinese, Szechuan, Mandarin and Hunan, many qualifying as both low fat and low cholesterol at this time of year when “beach season” is getting closer and closer.

One of my goals this year is to eat more seafood, and Rice House is the place to find plenty of choices in that department. Shrimp comes paired with a variety of healthy choices, including mixed vegetables, broccoli, snow peas or cashews. A variety of scallop selections rounds out the sizeable seafood menu board.

Today, however, I decided to take advantage of the convenient lunch specials, served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Just about everything on the menu is available on the specials, which come complete with your choice of stir fried or white rice, egg roll or crab rangoon, and egg drop or wonton soup. My dining companion and I mixed up the choices so we could share and each have a little, and we can tell you that all of the sides are excellent. The one must-have for me is the crab rangoon. So much for beach season dieting.

My main menu choice was a healthy plate of rice, chicken and broccoli. To my liking, the Chinese know how to prepare broccoli better than anyone in the world. This little green flower is overflowing with Vitamin C, has a nice pinch of Vitamin A, and is even a good source of protein, fiber, and just a whole bunch of other good stuff.

Yep, I could just about make a meal of broccoli when it’s cooked tender with all the seasonings and rich flavorings of traditional Chinese food. The rice and chicken are simply a nice bonus.

As for the Rice House itself, my dining companion and I enjoyed the clean, clutter-free décor and were especially delighted by friendly service as we chatted away with the person behind the counter taking our order on a Sunday afternoon. It was a relaxing environment to unwind and enjoy a healthy and tasty meal.
