DES MOINES, Iowa – February 22, 2013 — The Polk County Board of Supervisors took action on February 19, 2013 to enter into an agreement with the City of Des Moines to disburse funds to low income Des Moines residents who are struggling with finding or maintaining suitable housing. Polk County was chosen by the City of Des Moines through a competitive bidding process and plans to disburse the funds through its General Assistance program. The amount available is $242,495. Under this agreement funds will be made available to qualified recipients for the following: rent, utilities, deposits and moving expenses. The grant was made available after the City of Des Moines received HUD funding through a Homelessness Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Grant (HEARTH).

Polk County’s General Assistance program provides financial assistance to eligible Polk County residents for basic needs such as housing and utilities.
