The Boulder Brook neighborhood in northwest Ankeny is a great location for a family home — just ask Karen Petersen Sales and her son, William, who have lived on Rockcrest Road since 2006.
After William was assigned to attend Westwood Elementary, they relocated from the other side of Ankeny into their ranch-style home. The 1,500-plus-square-foot main level features a corner fireplace in the living room and an up-to-date kitchen with a large pantry for storage.
“I didn’t have a pantry in my former home, and I considered it a must-have in this house,” says Karen. Just past the kitchen is a conveniently-located mudroom for shoes and coats with a door leading to the three-stall garage.
Before construction began on the home, Karen was able to make changes in the design to accommodate for William, who has special needs. One such modification was a more open floor plan with fewer walls and upper cabinets blocking the view from the kitchen to other areas of the home.
“I can be in the kitchen yet still see William wherever he might be on the first floor,” Karen says.
An expansive hallway leads to the main-level bedrooms, a bathroom and an area where Karen works from home.
“The hallway is wide and doesn’t feel as closed off as some hallways,” says Karen. Another priority she was able to address with her builder was a door leading directly into the backyard from inside the garage.
“Originally, the door was supposed to come off the side of the garage, but we were able to move it to the rear of the garage instead,” Karen says. Now, William can access his toys from inside the garage and walk directly into the backyard without leaving the safety of the fenced-in yard.
The nearly 1,000-square-foot finished basement with wet bar and television area has plenty of seating for lounging and watching movies.
Karen and William love their home and its location. They recently welcomed a new member into their family — a Golden-Doodle puppy named Maxie. No doubt, Maxie will be comfortable and happy as well in this great home.
