Tax help at the Johnston Library

Posted February 06, 2013 in Community Featured, Johnston

It’s that time of year again — time to gather your records and prepare your taxes.

Here at the library we have called in reinforcements to make this process as easy as possible for you. AARP tax counselors will be here Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings now through April 13 for free tax assistance.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, an AARP Foundation program, helps low- to moderate-income taxpayers have more discretionary income for everyday essentials, such as food and housing, by assisting with tax services and ensuring tax payers receive applicable tax credits and deductions. AARP tax assistance at Johnston Library is by appointment only this year; AARP tax preparers will not be accepting walk-ins at this location. Tax preparers will be at the library on Wednesdays from noon to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment stop by the Reference Desk at Johnston Public Library or call (515) 278-5233. For more information on the documents you should bring with you to your tax appointment, visit AARP’s online document preparation checklist at http://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/info-01-2011/important-tax-documents.html.

If you’re feeling ambitious and tackle your own taxes every year, we will have federal tax forms available at the library. The state of Iowa is no longer sending out state tax forms. However, you can access Iowa tax forms from our public computers or from your own home at http://www.iowa.gov/tax/.

Call the library at (515)278-5233 if you have any questions regarding tax forms or would like to schedule a tax preparation appointment with an AARP preparer.
