Fun in February at the Library

Posted February 06, 2013 in Community Featured, Clear Lake

There has been a great response to the library’s “Chill Out and READ” Winter Reading Program for all ages.

To date more than 150 readers have signed up for the program, and all participants are entered into the drawing for two grand prizes — a beautiful snow tiger plush toy and a Kindle e-book reader.

Readers in the winter program have been asked to rate the books they have been reading, with a four-star rating being the highest. Some of the titles rated at four-stars by adult readers include:  “Stolen Prey” by John Sandford, “No One Left to Tell” by Karen Rose, “The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath, “When It Happens to You” by Molly Ringwald, “The Unfinished Garden” by Barbara Claypole White and “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen.

Young adult four-star titles include “Lord of the Rings” trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Giver” series by Lois Lowry, “No Turning Back” by Tiffany Snow, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, “Schooled” by Gordon Korman and the Maya Davis “Cool Beans” series by Erynn Mangum.

Top-rated books for our youngest readers include “Fancy Nancy,” “A Day at the Beach” and “Elmo’s Play Day.”

The library offers other special events this month including a book signing by local author Jin Anastasi on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 10:30 a.m. Anastasi has worked for many years as an individual and family counselor, and in his books he highlights advice that he has shared with his clients over the years.

We will celebrate President’s Day with a program on Abraham Lincoln presented by Bennett Smith of Clear Lake on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m. Smith, a popular lecturer in area Lifelong Learning programs, will examine the life of Lincoln and the profound contribution that Lincoln made to our nation by being willing to risk civil war to save the Union. Topics to be covered include Lincoln’s early political career, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, his presidential election and his masterful leadership during the Civil War.

Our winter reading program will conclude with the ever-popular “Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration” open house family party on Feb. 25 from 5 – 7 p.m.  Call the youth department at 357-0315 for more information and to register your family for this fun event.

The Friends of the Library sponsor the Dr. Seuss celebration and nearly all of our other youth and adult programs in addition to purchasing books, audio-visual items and equipment for the library. February is the month for Friends members to renew their memberships and for new members to sign on with this vital community organization that does so much for our library. Call the library at 357-6133 or visit our website to find out more about the Friends of the Library.
