April 3, 1933 – January 31, 2013
Helen J. (Spurlock) Biller peacefully entered God’s kingdom on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at 10 p.m. She was surrounded by her family and the love of Christ.
Helen was born in Waterloo, IA to Charles and Clara Spurlock on April 3, 1933. After graduating from St. Mary’s Catholic High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Biller.
She always said, “The Lord commanded us to ‘go and multiply’, so that’s what we did.” Helen and Tom raised seven beautiful children and treasured the grandchildren and great grandchildren that followed. As an active member of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Helen filled her life with the love of God and His good works. She spent countless hours volunteering at the Bishop Drumm Care Center (her home away from home), at first taking care of friends of the family, but then, with a hug or a prayer, serving anyone who needed her help. She particularly cherished spending time with the retired Catholic sisters who resided there, and she looked forward to the day when she could join them as a resident. In 2006, she was honored as “Caregiver of the Year” by the Alzheimer’s Association.
Helen greatly enjoyed traveling with her husband, golfing, playing tennis, and baking…and she made new friends wherever life took her. She was a bright light in all of our lives.
Helen will be remembered for her devotion to family and friends, for her devotion to the holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary and, of course, for the hundreds of dozens of “Grandma Lasche” sugar cookies that became her calling card over these last years.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Millie, Donna, and Carole. She is survived by Tom, her husband of 59 years; her seven children, Scott (Sheri) Biller of Urbandale, Dan (Helen) Biller of Clive, Ben (Vicki) Biller of Leawood, KS, Jenny (Deacon Rick) Condon of Urbandale, Andy (Michelle) Biller of Council Bluffs, Angie (John) Ahlberg of Owatonna, MN, and Mary Helen Biller of Clive. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a sister, Charlise Monahan of Tempe, AZ.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 4 at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel beginning at 4:30 p.m. with a rosary at 6:45 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 5 at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church. Helen will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in Helen’s name be directed to the Bishop Drumm Care Center, the Iowa Spina Bifida Association, or InnerVisions HealthCare.
