Barbara Jean Fox, age 83 of Paton, Iowa, died on January 25, 2013 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa.

A time of visitation and remembrance was held at the Brown Funeral Home in Jefferson from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Jean will be cremated and her ashes interred in the Paton Cemetery at a later date.

Barbara Jean Fox (Jean) was born on February 6, 1929 in Paton, Iowa. She was the only child of Virgil Clyde and Iva Grace (Pemble) Anthony. She graduated from Paton Consolidated Schools in 1946. As a girl she worked for the Paton drug store where she was introduced to her future husband Robert (Bob) Fox by her co-worker Naomi Fox (Bob’s sister). Bob and Jean were married on August 23, 1946 at Grand Junction, Iowa. A daughter and four sons were born to this union. The couple farmed for many years near Paton before moving to town in 1971. Jean worked for the Paton-Churdan school district, mainly as a cook at the Paton Elementary School, where generations of elementary students came to know her as Grandma. Jean was an avid reader and was a frequent visitor to the Paton Library where she also volunteered. She loved handwork and sitting on the deck where she could enjoy a cold bottle of beer with beloved family and friends. She was a tremendous caregiver all of her life.

Jean is survived by her four sons: Tony (Liz) of Decorah (Emma, Claire and Maggie), Dean (Pat) of Manson (Rodney and Chad), Mark of Paton (Heather and Jason), and Jess (Lisa) of Shelbyville, Kentucky; nineteen great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her daughter Irene, and one great granddaughter Carrie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Iowa or the Paton Public Library.
