DES MOINES -The Des Moines Winter Games has taken on a new format this year with the City of Des Moines hosting a portion of the events and Sleepy Hollow hosting the remainder at their location. Sleepy Hollow’s events will take place on February 1st beginning at 5:30pm. Those events will include the Polar Plunge, Zibob Race, Rail Jam and Slope Style competition. Registration can be done in advance or that evening beginning at 4:00pm.
Drake University Enactus is sponsoring this year’s Polar Plunge with proceeds going to their charity, Freedom for Youth. The cost to dress up and get a little crazy jumping into frigid water is $5.00. It is a party atmosphere with the emphasis on fun, charity and the ability to claim you did it. They can also register the day of. Festivities/registration will begin at 5:30pm, with the costume contest at 6pm and the plunge immediately following.
Skiers and Snowboarders will have 2 competitions to participate in this year. The first will be a Slope Style beginning at 5:30pm and the second a Rail Jam at 8:00pm. Both competitions will be open to participants of varying ages and skill levels. Prizes will be awarded. It is a chance to show off the skills they work at all winter and participate in a competition without leaving the Des Moines area.
The Zibob race is meant for anyone who would enjoy being a part of the Winter Games activities. There is absolutely no skill required to participate, just a love of sledding. Participants ride the chair lift to the top of the hill, so they don’t even have to walk up. There will be practice time available before the race which is scheduled for 6:30pm.
This will be an evening planned for fun and friendly competition. Sleepy Hollow’s regular activities of Snow Tubing, Skiing and Snowboarding will be open to the public that evening from 5pm – 10pm with competitions taking place in select areas. Both participants and observers are welcome. There will be music, grilling, an outdoor bar and lots to see.
