Neva Jeanette Bartelt, 92, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services celebrating Neva’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Grimes, of which she as a member. Burial will follow at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.

Neva was born July 15, 1920, at the home of her parents, John and Ida Grace (Robertson) Peitzman in rural Grimes. She was a 1937 graduate of Grimes High School. On February 14, 1941, Neva married her high school sweetheart, Herman Bartelt and lived on the Bartelt family farm in rural Grimes. Neva was a caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who truly loved her family. Neva enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, playing cards, reading and gardening. She was active in the Dallas Center Women’s Club, St. Peter Lutheran Lydia Circle and Prairie Homemakers.

Neva and Herman enjoyed many travel adventures. They were together for 54 years before Herman’s passing, when Neva moved to the town of Grimes, where she lived before moving to Legacy in Waukee.

Left to celebrate her life and mourn her loss are her children, Evan (Judy) Bartelt of Waukee, Dean (Ann) Bartelt of St. Charles, Ellen (Dean) Zoerink of Macomb, IL, Bruce (Jahn) Bartelt of Grimes and Craig (Kathy) Bartelt of West Des Moines; sisters, Nadine Britson and Phyllis Wise; one sister-in-law, Mary Peitzman; and 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren that she held close to her heart. Neva was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herman; parents, John and Grace Peitzman; daughter-in-law, Esther Bartelt; brothers, Lynn and Wayne Peitzman; and one great-grandson, Riley Watson.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, at Iles Funeral Homes, Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. There will be an additional visitation on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service at St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Memorial tributes in Neva’s memory may be directed to St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Although our family is saddened by the loss of Mom’s earthly presence, we rejoice with her as she enters her long-awaited eternal home.
