John H. Stewart, age 91, of Carroll passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 24, 2013 a the First Presbyterian Church in Carroll with Rev. B.J. Ukena officiating. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Organist for the service will be Mrs. Sally Patten. Casket bearers will be John Paul Toyne, Tony Toyne, Jed Smith, Todd Smith, Randy Hobday, Leon Bertoli, and Tom Stewart. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery near Lidderdale.

Born on March 26, 1921 at rural Guthrie Center, Iowa, he was the son of Samuel Winfred and Mabel Oranna (Oakley) Stewart. He grew up in the Guthrie Center, Manning, and Auburn areas. Following school he worked on farms as a laborer and at age 19 he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was married to Pearl Olerich on November 22, 1942. The couple lived near Grant City, Iowa and John worked as farm laborer. They later moved to Lake City where he owned and operated Stewart Brother’s Construction with his brothers Robert and Willard. They built the Presbyterian Church in Auburn and many corn cribs and several houses in the area. In 1969 he was remarried to Donna Smith and the couple moved to southern California where John worked as a finish carpenter and was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. John retired in 1990 and moved back to Carroll. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. John enjoyed dancing, coin collecting, going to swap meets and garage sales, playing cards, and playing dominos, telling jokes, and spending time with his family.

John is survived by a daughter Sherry Toyne and her husband Vaughn of Freeport, Illinois; a son Terry Ray Stewart and his wife DeDee of Moreno Valley, California; a step-son Terry L. Smith and his wife Marcia of Lake City; a step-daughter Vickie Hobday and her husband Randy of Keller, Texas; sixteen grandchildren; thirty five great grandchildren; three sisters: Ruby Byriel of Audubon, Iowa, Roene Hiler of Lake City, Iowa, and Martha Dawson and her husband Luke of Georgia; three sisters-in-law: Maxine Stewart of Auburn, Delores Stewart of Des Moines, and Neva Chambers of Indianola; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Donna in 2006, an infant son John Samuel, and two brothers Robert and Willard.
