Arlean McDonald

Arlean Alice McDonald, 81, passed on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Edgewater in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, January 24, at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 10395 University Avenue in Clive, where the family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the service time on Thursday. Burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Arlean was born in rural Elkhorn, Iowa, to Elmer and Anna (Jorgensen) Petersen. She was a 1949 graduate of North High School in Des Moines. In 1954, Arlean married Donn McDonald at Highland Park Lutheran Church in Des Moines. They had four children, Paula, Marty, Eric and Ronn Miles. Arlean worked for several years in Des Moines and Rochester, NY before embarking on her career as a “full-time mom”—a job of which she was very proud. She was actively involved in the Des Moines school system, serving as PTA president at three different schools. She enjoyed tennis, yoga, book clubs, art classes, attending plays and concerts—particularly Broadway musicals—and was a member of the Red Hat Society. For nearly 50 years, she was a member of Highland Park Lutheran Church prior to Faith Lutheran Church, which she and Donn joined in the late 1980’s.

She is survived by her husband Donn; daughter, Paula McDonald (Bruce Brubaker) of both New York City and Massachusetts; three sons, Marty (Natalie) McDonald of Waukee, Eric (Sarah) McDonald of Northfield, MN and Miles (Ronda) McDonald of Overland Park, KS; two sisters, Marjorie Wildrick of West Des Moines and Shirley (Vince) Caudle of Rapid City, SD; brother, Paul Petersen of Pittsford, NY; and eight grandchildren, Alanna, Alison, Nathan, Evan, Grace, Simon, Anna and Caroline. Arlean was preceded into eternal life by her parents and one sister, Juanita Diaz.

Arlean’s family expresses their gratitude to the CNAs, nursing and therapy staff, and administration at Edgewater’s Aster cottage for their loving and patient care and support.

The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to Edgewater’s Good Samaritan Fund or the Des Moines Art Center.
