Family Affair

Posted January 16, 2013 in Community Featured, Grimes

The garage of Jason and Karen Friesen holds a bike for everyone in the family, with an extra reserved for the young one on the way.

The Friesen garage is filled with bikes for every member of the family.

The Friesen garage is filled with bikes for every member of the family.

“We don’t ride them as much as we like,” admits Karen. “But we do really enjoy them when we do get out.”

With five kids, ranging in age from 5 to 15, the Friesens have an active calendar, but they do find time to enjoy the trails in and around Grimes.

“In the summertime,” says Friesen, “one of the kids’ favorite things to do is to take their bikes up the trail to the ice cream store.”

Mom and Dad, admittedly, have the nicest bikes — he with a Giant and hers a Trek. The kids, however, seem like most families with a smorgasbord of bikes, ranging in size from an adult 10-speed to the littlest kids’ bikes.

“We’ve gathered the bikes from garage sales, hand-me-downs and there might be a Wal-mart bike in there, too,” says Friesen. “Jason and I have the nicest bikes, but we wish we could ride them more often.”

They do dream of a family cycling vacation.

“Our dream vacation is to ride the bike trail through northern Missouri,” says Friesen. “We’ve heard it’s a beautiful trail that starts in St. Charles and heads west following the Missouri River. I think it would be good for us because it’s flat; with as little as we ride, that would be good.”

Though January snows cover area trails, the Friesens look forward to spring thaw to clear the trails, allowing the young Friesens to make the trek to the ice cream store while they await the arrival of the newest member of their family, due this summer.
