Velma Waters

Velma J. Waters, the daughter of John and Ethel (Gregg) Potts, was born December 18, 1923 on the family farm in Calhoun County, Iowa, and departed this life January 11, 2013 at the Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 89 years and 23 days.

Velma Potts attended and graduated from the Rockwell City High School in 1942. She later took training as a X-ray Technician at a hospital in Fort Dodge.

On October 7, 1951, Velma Potts was united in marriage to Harold Waters at her parent’s home in Rockwell City. A daughter, Terri, was born to this union. Harold and Velma farmed the family farmed east of Lohrville. Velma also worked as a secretary at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City and as a secretary at the Lohrville School. They moved to a home in Lohrville in 1991. Harold passed away in June of 2009 and Velma became a resident of the Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City in November of that year.

Velma was a member of the Lohrville United Methodist Church. Velma enjoyed playing bridge and golfing.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Terri and her husband, Steve Vote of rural Lohrville, four grandchildren; Derek Vote, Brian Vote and his wife, Ann, and their child, Ella, Lindsay Vote Machovec and her husband, Kevin, and their children, Mackenzie, Nolan, Mason, Kennadie, Matthew and Lacy, and Lucas Vote and his wife, Jacquelyn and their child, Kinley. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, husband and a son in infancy.

A celebration of Velma’s life was held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday January 16, 2013 from the United Methodist Church in Lohrville with Pastor Lexie Kirkpatrick officiating. Interment was made in the Evergreen Cemetery near Lohrville. Musical selection, “Peace in the Valley” was sung by soloist, Ashley Thieszen and accompanied by organist, Nila Spencer.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
