The start of the 2013-14 school year may be months away, but kindergarten registration is just around the corner.
On January 15, 2013, parents and guardians can enroll their child in kindergarten for the upcoming school year. A child is eligible to enroll in kindergarten if he or she is 5 years old as of Sept. 15, 2013.
Each of the five elementary schools in the district – Beaver Creek, Horizon, Lawson, Timber Ridge, and Wallace – will hold an information meeting and registration from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Parents should come prepared with the following documents:
- Proof of legal address or residence (i.e. utility bill with your name and address on it)
- Child’s birth certificate or birth record from hospital
- Child’s immunization record
At the meeting, staff will share information about the kindergarten programs offered in Johnston. This will include busing, all-day kindergarten daily schedule, developmental kindergarten options, curriculum, health information, before and after school care, and other details. This is a night designed for parents; children will have an opportunity to visit their school in April.
Parents should also double-check elementary boundary lines, to avoid confusion when registering. A map is available here. Parents choosing to open enroll their child can also register on January 15, but the child’s building placement will be determined in June, based on class size and room availability.
Iowa law requires that all students must be immunized against diptheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus (DPT), polio, rubeola, rubella (measles) before entering school. Three hepatitis B vaccinations are required if the student was born on or after July 1, 1994. At two doses of Varicella vaccine is required if the student was born on or after September 15, 2003 (reliable history of Chickenpox is also accepted). There must be a physical completed after age 4. Contact your physician if you have questions about immunization. Read the full immunization requirement flyer here, from the State of Iowa.
Approximately 487 students registered as kindergarteners in 2012-13. This number is expected to go up, as the district increases enrollment numbers across all grades.
