After the holidays, January can seem like a break from faith, but even in the “off-season” you can get out and experience the joys of life and the Lord.

Perhaps this is the year to open your hearts and minds to faith and beliefs of other religious denominations. One way to do that is to join Heartland Presbyterian Church’s interfaith educational series going on for two weeks in January.

“Many will remember the last January Thaw at Dowling High School that brought in nearly 200 people. We did an August Thaw this summer to test the waters, and we had 40 people attend each of the four classes,” says one church organizer.

It is because of their success and enthusiasm that Heartland Presbyterian is bringing January Thaw back once again. This year, courses will be held on Tuesdays, Jan. 8 and 15, and Thursdays, Jan. 10 and 17 from 6:30 – 9 p.m. Each course is two nights, though you have the option to only attend one of the two offered. The cost for one course of two sessions is $25; two courses are $50.

Tuesday courses (Jan. 8 and 15) offers topics such as Racism and Reparations, Satan, Human Evolution and the Five Pillars of Islam and others. Thursday (Jan. 10 and 17) topics include Spirituality and Art, Catholic Liturgy, Jewish Feminism, Buddhist Philosophy and many more. Courses run from 7 – 9 p.m. with a short break for refreshments at 8 p.m.

Entertainment will be offered each night between 6:30 and 7 p.m. and includes the Java Jews band, harpist Rebecca Whitlow, opera singer Eileen Cooper and the Heartland Jazz Trio.

For a complete list of classes, find the online course catalog and registration forms at www.dmreligious.org. Send completed form and checks made payable to DMARC, 3816 36th St., Suite. 202, Des Moines, Iowa 50310. For more information, call the DMARC office at 515-277-6969 or info@dmreligious.org. (Snow dates are Jan. 22 and 24).
