Bernard Porter, the oldest continuous resident of Altoona, was born May 22, 1913 and died Jan. 7, 2013.
After graduating from Altoona High School and attending two years of business college, Bernard began a lifetime of farming and married Elizabeth Walton from Mitchellville, who preceded him in death.
Survivors include: their two children, Steven (Donna) Porter of Corning, IA; Ruth (Gail) Hurst of Altoona, IA; Grandchildren, Laura (Joel) Fritz of Indianola, IA., Wendy (John) Marshall of Nodaway, IA, Matt (Jenny) Porter of Exira, IA, David (Julie) Hurst of Berkley, MI, and Derrick (Jocelyn) Hurst of Oakland, CA, and 7 great grandchildren.
Bernard farmed a designated Century farm dating from the mid 1800’s, first with his father Ortis, who had farmed it with his father James. Bernard expanded and enjoyed operating Porter Machine, for custom machining, until his 90’s.
Bernard loved farming, gardening, flowers and the people around him. He will be lovingly missed by his family and loyal friends, including Donna Weatherman who assisted him in his final years. All who knew him enjoyed his stories, humor, wisdom and kindly spirit.
