Eldon “Al” Schuler, age 86, of Carroll passed at Regency Park Nursing Home in Carroll on January 3, 2013.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 P.M. Monday, January 7, 2013 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Father Tim Johnson as celebrant. Lector for the Mass will be Jeff Schuler. Eucharistic ministers will be Al’s daughters: Vickie Duff and Kristi Jorgensen and gift bearers will be his grandchildren: Becky Duff, Katie Schuler, Kelly Schuler and Stef Jorgensen. Organist for the Mass will be Mrs. Barb McDeermott and the Holy Spirit Choir will sing. Casket Bearers will be Tom Schuler, David Duff, Stan Henrich, Duane Wenck, Dave Paulson, and Bob Riesenberg. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery . Friends may call after 3:30 P.M. on Sunday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake service at 7:00 P.M. by Holy Spirit Parish. The casket will be moved to the Church at 11:00 A.M. on Monday for viewing until time of the service. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers friends may if they wish contribute to St. Anthony Hospice or Holy Spirit Church and memorials may be left at the funeral Home or the church.
Born on October 22, 1926 at Nortonville, Kansas, he was the son of Urban and Dora (Weishaar) Schuler. Al attended St. Joseph Catholic School for 8 years and graduated from Nortonville High School at the age of 17 where he lettered in Basketball. He came to Iowa in 1949 and started working for Carroll County Road Department on April 1, l949. He was married to Rosemary (Rosie) Meister on November 21, 1949 at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Breda by the late Father LeRoy Frank. The couple made their home in Carroll. Al was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corp in January of 1952 during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge from the service he returned to employment with Carroll County where he worked until his retirement. He had been shop foreman the last 8 years of his employment. He and his wife owned and operated the Schuler Rooming House for 14 years 1968 to 1982. In his younger years he enjoyed deer, pheasant, and quail hunting and fishing, especially the annual father son fishing trips to Canada and trout fishing in South Dakota with friends. In later years he and his wife enjoyed traveling in all 49 State, Canada, Mexico and Ireland. He also enjoyed playing cards, socializing with his friends, music especially the Jan Russell Band and spending time with his family. Al was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and he was an honorary member of Charles Carroll Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Al is survived by his wife Rosie of Carroll; two daughters: Vickie Duff and her husband Les of Carroll and Kristie Jorgensen and her husband John of Carroll; a son Jeff Schuler and his wife Jeri of Carroll; five Grandchildren; a sister JoAnn Gibson and her husband Wendell of Memphis, Tennessee; and a sister-in-law Jeanne Schuler of Nortonville, Kansas, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Rachel Theis and her husband John and Alice Finnegan and her husband Dennis, his brother Charles Schuler, and his mother and father-in-law Fred and Emma Meister.Information provided by: Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home
