Mary Jean Mathis, age 94, of 1514 Kate Shelley Drive, died December 25, 2012, at the Westhaven Community.
Her body has been cremated. A Memorial Service will be this spring at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone.
Her cremains will be buried in Linwood Park Cemetery.
Mary Jean was born in Elgin, Nebraska, on August 6, 1918, the daughter of Ernestine and Albert Trowbridge.
She graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, Nebraska, and Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri. Mary Jean then graduated from the University of Nebraska.
On February 14, 1943, Mary Jean married Arlis Mathis in Saint Louis, Missouri.
She was a social worker for the Red Cross in San Francisco for three years while Arlis was at sea in the Navy.
Mary Jean was a life time member of the Presbyterian Church and an active member of PEO, Questers, the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace, and the Boone County Historical Society.
She enjoyed playing bridge, antiquing, reading, traveling, and being with family and friends.
Mary Jean is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister Virginia Curry.
She is survived by a son Stephen Mathis and wife Mary-Kathryn Mathis of Montrose, Colorado; a daughter Barbara Gohman and husband Dr. James Gohman of Ames; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In memory of Mary Jean, memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace, or the Boone County Historical Society.
