April 3, 1926 – December 31, 2012
Marilynn Condon peacefully died of dementia on December 31, 2012, at Calvin Community in Des Moines.
She was born to Gladys and Curtis Sauve in Davenport, Iowa, on April 3, 1926. Her parents divorced during the Depression, and Marilynn was placed into care with nuns in Alton, Illinois. At age 14, she chose to convert to Catholicism and her strong, personal commitment to faith began. Ultimately, her mother remarried, and the reunited family moved to Des Moines with her adoptive father, Harry Morgan.
Marilynn graduated from North High and AIB. At school events, she sang with Louie Wertz, who later became Roger Williams. During World War II, she lived in New York City. Music and theater were two of her many passions throughout her life.
On September 20, 1947, she married William J. Condon in Culver City, California. In 1949, they moved back to Des Moines with their first son, Mike. They were blessed with three other children, Rick, Lori and Bill, and shared many great memories over the course of their 56-year marriage. Marilynn and Bill were huge fans of the Hawkeyes, Christopher’s Restaurant, bridge parties and backyard barbecues. In the early 1970s, they moved to Dubuque with their youngest son, Bill. Wherever they were, their home became a gathering place for friends from all walks of life. During her time in Dubuque, Marilynn was president of Women’s Action for Nuclear Disarmament. She was an activist for peace and justice.
The 1960s were a pivotal time in Marilynn’s life. She survived breast cancer. She joined the administrative staff of the Drake University Theater Department. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Newman Center, Drake’s Catholic campus ministry and led the liturgy team, singers and musicians. Students would regularly “hang out” at Marilynn’s to talk about politics, world events, religious issues and more. Lifelong friendships developed. Marilynn often said, “Once you’ve had the experience of community, you’ll be looking for community or making community wherever you go.”
Marilynn was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 2003. She is survived by her four children, Mike (Mickey) Condon, Rick (Jenny) Condon, Lori (Randy) Grant and Bill (Patty) Condon. She has five grandchildren, Katie Meadows, Jon Grant, Janelle Kennedy, Janet Regier and Carly Condon, as well as six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Jacque (Mark) Pogue and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, January 4, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. A rosary will be said at 5 p.m., and a vigil service will be held at 6:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 5, at St. Pius X Catholic Church with interment at Glendale Cemetery.
We are grateful for the caring support of Dr. Yogesh Shah, Dr. Eric Hockett and the staff of Calvin Community. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the VFW.
