Chris J. Schmitt (47) passed away suddenly on Monday, December 31 in Memphis, TN. He was doing what he loved best – spending time with his son at an Iowa State Cyclone football game.
Chris was born to Earl and Annell Schmitt on October 28, 1965 in Decorah, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Festina, Iowa, and graduated from South Winneshiek Community High School in 1984. He attended Iowa State University and worked for Sigler Companies in Ames, Iowa. In 1996 he was married to Debbie Roberts. Though they later divorced, they remained committed friends and dedicated parents to their son, Wyatt. Chris received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from William Penn University. For the past 13 years, Chris worked at GuideOne Insurance in West Des Moines, currently as the Manager of Real Estate and Print/Supply Services.
Chris had a passion for youth sports, and loved coaching Little League, USSSA baseball and recreational football and basketball. He served on the Johnston Little League Board of Directors, and was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. Chris was widely known for his quick wit and servant’s heart.
Chris was a devoted father to his fifteen-year-old son, Wyatt, and a faithful son to his father, Earl, both of Johnston, IA. He was a selfless brother to three sisters: Felicia (Allen) Miedema of Urbandale, IA, Sharon (Daniel) Cloud of Glenview, IL, and Sheila (David) Blanco of Chicago, IL, and two brothers: Warren (Sarah) Schmitt of Dakota Dunes, SD, and Jason (Mary Jo) Schmitt, of Ames, IA, and a beloved uncle to twelve nieces and nephews. Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Annell, and grandparents Chris and Agnes Schmitt and James and Mary Lee Johnson.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, January 4, with a 6:30 p.m. scripture and prayer service at Johnston Evangelical Free Church, 9901 NW 62nd Ave, Johnston, IA. A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Saturday, January 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Johnston Evangelical Free Church with visitation also before the service from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.
