Funeral services for Elmer Nees, age 81, of Carroll, will be 1:30 PM, Monday, December 31, 2012, at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Officiating will be Father Timothy Schott of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday after 11 AM until time of services. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Arcadia with Military Honors by Ehlers Gerken American Legion Post of Arcadia.

Elmer passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at Swan House in Carroll. Born on March 26, 1931 at Lidderdale, he was the son of Rudolph and Anna Mary (Underberg) Nees. Elmer attended school at Mt. Carmel and graduated in 1949. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served on active duty for one year. On August 16, 1951, Elmer was united in marriage with Marjean Delores Haverkamp at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia by Father Mathias Stork. The family farmed north of Carroll and Elmer did sell real estate for a time. Marjean passed away on July 10, 2012. Elmer was a member of the Charles Carroll Council Knights of Columbus, the Ehlers Gerken Post of American Legion and Carroll County Farm Bureau. He had a passion for poker and reinviting poker players, fishing, going on family vacations and was a gregarious fun-loving guy. Surviving are daughter Debra Jotham and her husband Bill of Bradenton, Florida; a son Randy Nees and his wife Carol of Ashburn, Virginia; a daughter Michelle Hoye and her husband Jim of Rock Rapids, Iowa; a son Jeff Nees and his wife Diane (Di) of Alexandria, Virginia; eight Grandchildren; Seven Great Grandchildren; sisters Florence Chamberlain of Jefferson, Wisconsin; Rita Dentlinger of Manning; Roselle Berger of Carroll; Mary Ann Brandt of Manilla; 2 brothers Kenneth Nees of Mt. Carmel, Iowa and Duane Nees of Cincinnati, Ohio; and a sister-in-law Armella Venteicher of Arcadia. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marjean and three brothers: Marvin, Francis and Donald.
