Christmas celebrations may be over, but there’s a whole new year to get excited about. From fall to spring, Westminster Presbyterian Church’s Anchor Coffee House plays host to numerous up-and-coming musicians, offering entertainment the whole family can enjoy.

On Jan. 19, all are welcome to share a cup of joe and enjoy the original piano styles of David Zollo. With his dusty lyrics and rough-edged delivery, Zollo offers new perspectives on timeless topics as he chronicles the ups and downs of own life in Iowa.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. They are available in advance online, at the church (call 274-1534 to purchase with credit card), at Uptempo Music in Beaverdale or at the door for a slightly higher fee. What’s more, there is free childcare and gourmet coffee, teas and desserts. Anchor Coffee House is located in Westminster Hall, at the north end of the church building (use the Allison Avenue entrance). Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.

How about starting this new year with new friends from a different culture? The Iraqi community in the Des Moines area welcomes new friends to attend a New Year’s party. There will be food, music and a few other surprises. Everyone is invited to come out to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a special musical performance by Iraqi group, Al-Salaam.

With holiday gift-buying behind us, many people might be wondering how to keep food on the table. Find financial peace on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at First Federated Church, which is hosting a free preview of Financial Peace University from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The church offers a class on the basics of setting and sticking to a budget, saving money, paying off debt, investing, buying insurance and much more. This is a great opportunity for all, especially students and recent graduates to learn the basics of self-sufficiency. The class officially starts the following week, on Jan. 16. Visit www.daveramsey.com for more info on the class.

Men, mark your calendars for “Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood,” an all-day event on “Super Saturday,” Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This all-day seminar will challenge men to tackle something much larger than each other. Visit www.mensteppingup.com for more details.
