In the fall of 2011, the Appanoose County Wellness Coalition formed with the goal of working toward improving the health and well being of residents.
Since that time, we have sponsored fitness activities, educational events and generally tried to incorporate a healthier message wherever possible. Our biggest event was the 100 Day Wellness Challenge. This was not a new event. However, Gov. Brandstad’s Healthiest State Initiative has brought more attention to it and encouraged our group, and most other counties, to take it more seriously. In 2011, we ranked 89th in the percentage of residents that participated. In 2012, we moved up to second place with more than 22 percent of adults and children participating.
We are hoping to have great results again this year. It’s not about winning or beating another community — although it does feel good to be among the top counties. Live Healthy Iowa brings together friends, families, businesses and communities in team-based wellness challenges designed to promote positive lifestyle change.
This year there is one major change: Instead of 100 days, it is the 10 Week Wellness Challenge. Dates are Jan. 28 to April 5. Registration began Dec. 19. Cost is $20, and I encourage teams to form early because there are limited numbers of $5 discount coupons available from HyVee.
This is how it works: Participants form teams of two to 10 adults to motivate and support each other in achieving their fitness and weight loss goals. Each team needs to choose one person to be its team captain who will have regular computer and Internet access. Teams may participate in the Minutes of Activity Division and/or the Weight Loss Division. Through this website, livehealthyiowa.org, team captains register a team, and team members report their progress weekly. This site also provides a daily journal and message center to help keep team members connected and involved in making health changes to reach their fitness and weight loss goals. If you are signing up a team for Live Healthy Iowa, please use LHIAPPCO as your group ID so that we can track all of the Appanoose County teams.
All Live Healthy Iowa participants receive a T-shirt and helpful resources to guide them toward success. In Appanoose County, we will be having our own business challenge, awarding a trophy and celebration for the business that has the highest percentage of employees beginning and finishing the challenge.
