The Friends of the Drake Public Library will start selling raffle tickets on Jan. 3 for a 68- x 87-inch quilt. Proceeds will support the library and promote literacy.
Tickets are available at the library for $1 each or six for $5. The drawing for the winner will take place April 3.
The Friends recently elected their 2013 – 2014 officers and directors. They are President Colene Chebuhar, Vice President Deanna Allen, Secretary Lois Hays, Treasurer Lora Kelly and directors at large Jeanie Russo, Jane Craver, Sue Sacco and Helen Carlson.
Recent activities and fundraisers included recruiting personal and corporate annual sponsors for the first time in the history of the Friends of the Drake Public Library with much success and generosity from sponsors in Iowa plus four other states. They provided, set up and decorated a new Christmas tree on the main floor and wrapped approximately 75 gifts at the seventh annual gift-wrapping fundraiser, which raised more than $300.
The Friends paid for a new bookcase for the young adult section, paid subscription renewal for WILBOR online E-books and paid for all magazine subscription renewals.
They continue to provide “Books for Babies” packets to parents of newborns that include a book, a bib and important information on how to get your child interested in books at an early age.
The Friends’ mission is to support the Drake Public Library by providing extra items and services not covered by the general budget and to promote literacy. To make that possible, they hold four annual fundraisers, charge embership dues and recruit sponsors.
The first meeting for 2013 will be on Tuesday, Jan. 29 when they will discuss their budget for the year, which will include supporting the children’s summer reading program.Drake Public Library
