The holidays are a time of joyful celebration… at least they are most of the time. But sometimes the holidays are filled with stress, depression and loneliness.
In either case, there is no better time to turn to the church community. And regardless of whether your Christmas was bright or blue, most of us welcome the new year that follows. It’s an opportunity to renew the faith we already have and to restore in those who find themselves lost.
January is a time of renewal and preparation for another year. And even though it’s a moment to relax and catch your breath before the Easter season starts up, that doesn’t mean there should be any fewer activities for folks looking to get together during the chilly months. Beginning Jan. 9 and continuing every Wednesday, First Christian Church, 103 Green St., will be hosting a free-will dinner when families and friends can gather in the celebration of togetherness. Additionally there will be a variety of programs to take part in, including the Christian Children’s Fellowship for kids pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and Lighthouse Youth for juniors and seniors in high school. Kids won’t be the only ones having fun, though. There is also an adult Bible study and choral practice taking place. The dinner begins at 6 p.m. with the programs following between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Find out more details by calling the church at 462-1276.
As we get deeper into the winter months in Iowa, thoughts of sunshine, warm weather and enjoying the outdoors again help us persevere through the blistering cold. For a child, these thoughts might be accompanied by fond memories of summer camps gone by and those still to come. Word of Life Family Church, 2611 Highway 169, offers youth and teens the chance to raise money so they can enjoy all the fun and friends of camp. There will be a Youth Fundraiser Lunch at 9 a.m. on Feb. 3 as well as every month until summer camp begins. Church leaders welcome people to come out and lend your support to these kids who understand the rewards of working hard for what you want.
