St. John’s Lutheran Church celebrates the fine arts with its Midweek Music Series
kicking off Jan. 2.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we often forget to take a moment to slow down and enjoy the beautiful things going on around us. This is why each Wednesday afternoon, St. John’s Lutheran Church will be hosting its Midweek Music Series Concerts in the sanctuary, beginning on Jan. 2 with Tom Hudson on the cello and Sue Hudson playing the piano.

World-class musicians will perform each of these 25-minute, free concerts. The January lineup includes dancers Kathleen Hurley, Paula McArthur, Ray Songayllo on the piano, John Benoit of the Ballyhoo Foxtrot Combo, the IMTA District piano audition winners and the Amadeus Trio, made up of Janean Schaefer Denhart, Joyca Wheeler and Susan Odem.

Each concert will begin at 12:05 p.m. and is the perfect way to insert an oasis of calm into a busy schedule. The series will continue its focus on classical music but will also offer a sampler of folk and other world music. To top off this event, a light lunch will be served in Weerts Hall for $6.

Music isn’t the only talent being recognized at St. John’s. Each month they feature an Artist of the Month, which is geared toward gaining exposure and recognition for these talented artists. Tim Quinn is January’s featured artist.

Weertz Hall is located on the lower level of St. John’s. Mediums range from photography, painting, mixed media and more. Artists are free to choose their subject matter. The gallery is available for viewing when the church is open. Upcoming artists include Janet Pittman with the Art of Quilting, for February, and a collaborative painting and mixed media installation of the theme of Lent produced by the children and youth of St. John’s.

If you are interested in receiving emails about the Midweek Music Series and other fine arts events such as Artist of the Month, contact Beth Ann Edwards at thearts@stjohnsdsm.org. To take a look at the pieces of art in St. John’s gallery stop by at 600 Sixth Ave.
