Leona Grace Byerly, age 92, of Scranton passed away on Monday, December 17, 2012 at Greene County Long Term Care in Jefferson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at the Church of Christ in Scranton with Pastor Bob McKnight officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:00 A.M. on Thursday until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Mrs. Laura McKnight. Casket bearers will be Leona’s grandsons. Burial will be in the Dillavou Cemetery near Scranton.
Born on August 14, 1920 at Carthage, South Dakota, she was the daughter of Hubert and Jennie (Brace) Bascombe. Leona grew up in Carthage where she attended school. She was married to Romayne A. Byerly on September 28, 1937 in Carthage, South Dakota. The couple moved to Scranton following their marriage. She was employed at the Scranton Grocery Store, the Scranton Café, and she helped her husband in the operation of their gas stations in Scranton and Ralston. Leona did volunteer work for Scranton Congregate Meals and in 1990 she was nominated and awarded Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year for Greene County for her work there. She also wrote articles for the Scranton Journal. Leona loved to read, do crosswords, play cards, crochet, and spend time with her family. Leona was a tireless worker, a great cook, a fantastic mother, grandmother, and helper for anyone in need. She was a member of the Scranton Church of Christ for many years where she was the Sunday school superintendant for many years, sang in the choir, was a member of the Dorcas Circle, and helped organize many church events. She was also a member of the Progressive Neighbors Club and The Birthday Club.
Leona is survived by six children: Dolores McCormick (Robert) of Bellevue, Nebraska; Janice Meyer (Dennis) of Ogden, Iowa; Duane Byerly (Andrea) of Marshalltown, Iowa; Eloise Umbaugh (Orvie) of Scranton, Iowa; Leon Byerly of Coon Rapids, Iowa; Dennis Byerly (Connie) Hamburg, Minnesota; 22 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Kathleen Bascombe of Horicon, Wisconsin.
