It had been a long day of swinging a hammer for one of us and a long day of Christmas shopping for the other. They are both exhausting ways to spend a day.
Determined to catch a quick bite to eat before we headed home, my dining companion and I met up at Lefti’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill for something tall and cold, and hot and delicious.
My dining companion was already sipping on something tall and cold by the time I got there. We found a couple of menus, but I knew the minute I saw the special that that’s what he would be ordering. There’s something about a hearty cheeseburger — especially one made with a thick patty of real beef — that just fills a person up after a tiring day.
With its casual but inviting atmosphere, Lefti’s is the kind of place where you just know you’re going to get a really good hamburger, and they did not disappoint.
I thought about just ordering an appetizer — perhaps the cheddar jack quesadilla or mini taco plate — and calling that dinner, but opted for something a little more balanced. My choice was a basket of crisp and juicy chicken strips, but it was the side dish that was hard to choose. The minestrone soup looked and smelled absolutely yummy, especially on a cold winter’s day, but I settled on the french fries. Crisp and lightly seasoned, the fries were an excellent choice, but I’ll be back later this winter to sample that minestrone for myself.
In addition to the wonderful meal, we both enjoyed the atmosphere. It’s a little bit sports bar, a little bit neighborhood café, and a great place to meet up with friends to kick back and enjoy a good meal and a little something to drink.
Getting ready to call it a night, we looked at the check and had to look twice: “We got all of that for only that?” we said to each other in most pleasant surprise. We’ve paid far more for far less elsewhere — and didn’t enjoy it half as much.
If we gave stars, Lefti’s would get an All Star, Five Star rating: Very affordable, very delicious, very clean, and a great place to end a hard day of working… or even shopping.Lefti’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill 2001 Second Ave. North 515-576-5338 Hours: Monday: 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday: 11 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. Wed. – Sat.: 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
