Mary Grant Purdy, 63, died of cancer on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at home in Des Moines. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel in Des Moines. The family will greet visitors from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and a memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Following the funeral, her body will be donated to Des Moines University.
Grant was born in 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland. At a young age, she moved with her family to Lakewood, Colorado. After graduating from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she moved to Des Moines in 1972. She received her Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Des Moines University in 1991. She worked for 18 years at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She had a passion for bagpipe music and was a long-time member of the Iowa Scottish Pipes and Drums.
Grant was preceded in death by her parents, William Grant Purdy and Mary Boss Purdy and her brother, John Purdy.
Grant is survived by her long-time companion, Ruth Quinn of Des Moines; her sister, Sarah Purdy of St. Paul, Minnesota; and her brothers, Tom Purdy (wife, Libby) of Ben Lomond, California and David Purdy of Canby, Oregon. She is also survived by her nieces, Laurel Purdy of Indonesia, Mackenzie Purdy of Camirillo, California, and Molly Rutledge of St. Paul, Minnesota; her nephew, Grant Purdy of Sweden; her step-daughter, Laura Quinn Bouma (husband, Tim) and their three children of Portland, Oregon; and her step-son, David Quinn (Andrea) and their five children and one grandchild of Des Moines.
Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, Iowa Public TV, Iowa Public Radio, or HCI Care Services of Central Iowa.
