Elizabeth Arenson Sherman, 93, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2012. She was a lifelong resident of Des Moines, graduating from North High School and attended the University of Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur M. Sherman. They were co-owners of Sherman’s SuperValu and Fairgrounds SuperValu.
Elizabeth was an active volunteer in the community, serving as President of the Guild of the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, spending countless hours with the residents helping with their daily activities. She was also the President of the Iowa Grocers’ Association Guild. For many years, Elizabeth conducted tours of the Governor’s Mansion in Des Moines and later worked in the gift shop. She was an active member of Tifereth Israel Synagogue and a member of the Women’s League Board.
She is survived by her children, Peggy and Philip Paget and Madelyn and Donald Schoen; her grandchildren, Ari and Ava Paget, Brooke Paget, Justin Schoen, Carolyn and Joseph Gorowski, and Aaron Schoen; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Megan and Jo Arenson. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brother, Bernard Arenson.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 10, at Tifereth Israel Synagogue. Memorial contributions may be made to a special fund at Tifereth Israel Synagogue or the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center.
