Ways to Celebrate

Posted December 05, 2012 in Adel, Community Featured

New Hope Church is one of many offering Christmas activities this month.

This holiday season, instead of bundling up to go “walking in a winter wonderland,” take a journey with folks from New Hope Church through some of Iowa’s history with a tour of Salisbury House and Terrace Hill, as well as two South-of-Grand private estates owned by  Tom and Kathryn Bernau and Charles and Becky Beach.

This year’s event features handcrafted artwork and baked goods from the Holiday Bazaar at Central Presbyterian Church. The cost of this adventure is $15, and includes the tour, refreshments and entertainment.

All are invited to join. Meet at New Hope Church on Saturday Dec. 8 before 10 a.m. and all will ride together. The tour lasts until 3 p.m.

As many will be celebrating with family and friends this Christmas season, others might enjoy the opportunity to reflect on their own actions over the past year. St. John’s Parish presents guest speaker Matt Hallbach, the director of St. Joseph Education Center, who will be making a presentation at 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Hallback will be discussing the history of Advent, the practice and meaning of the liturgical and domestic traditions surrounding the season, and the importance of reconciliation and healing in preparation for the feast of Christmas. Following the presentation there will be a Reconciliation Service in the church at 4 p.m. There will be several priests present to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Adel United Methodist Church will hold a special Travelers Christmas Eve Worship on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship Service is a traditional and beautiful way to celebrate the season. But every year there are some who may have to work, or who will be traveling to visit family or friends on Christmas Eve who would miss the beauty of candles and carols. Everyone is invited to join in this alternative opportunity to celebrate the reason for the season. Additionally, the congregation welcomes the public to attend a showing of “White Christmas” on the church’s large screen in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m., including free popcorn, cookies and beverages.

It wouldn’t be the holiday season without a few performances from Adel’s youth. Check out the children’s Christmas program at Faith Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 7 – 8 p.m.
