Tom McGrew, whose first name was actually Tommy, passed away from colon and liver cancer on December 4, 2012, at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. He was 66. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, December 9, at Iles Funeral Homes-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Burial will follow at Brethren Cemetery.
Tom graduated from Dallas Center High School in 1964. He then attended McPherson College in Kansas for 1½ years. Tom was drafted into the Army in 1966 and served as a medical specialist and a food and drug inspector in South Korea and at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was discharged to reserve status in 1968. Tom qualified as an expert in rifle marksmanship during his term of service and he was a life member of the National Rifle Association.
Tom began working as a mechanic at the U. S. Postal Service Bulk Mail Center in Urbandale in 1973 and retired from there in 2003.
He purchased land from Clyde and Elsie Waters in rural Minburn on Midland Trail in 1979 and lived there until November of 2010. He had many friends who would come there and sit around the wood stove with him having great conversations and arguments about current events.
Tom is survived by his mother, Inez McGrew, and his sister, Dixie McGrew, both of Dallas Center. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7: 30 p.m. Friday at Brandt Chapel. Memorials may be made to Veterans Hospital for its palliative (hospice) care unit, Attention Volunteer Services, 3600 30th Street, Des Moines, IA 50310.
