July 26, 1920 – November 29, 2012
Gail A. Jennings, 92, passed from this life on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 3, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Monday. Entombment will follow at Merle Hay Mausoleum in Des Moines.
Gail was born on July 26, 1920, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to John G. and Della Mae (Tune) Bruce; and lived a happy life under their guidance. After graduating from Marshalltown High School and Junior College, she attended Drake University in Des Moines, where Gail graduated with a B.A. degree in Liberal Arts and a Teaching Certificate. While at Drake, she met the love of her life and future husband, Ray W. Jennings. On July 16, 1943, in Marshalltown, they were united in marriage. Since World War II had just begun, Ray had been commissioned as a Navy Flight Instructor and was soon stationed at six different bases. Gail was fortunate enough to follow him to each new assignment as they began their new life together.
When the war ended, Gail and Ray returned to Des Moines, where they made their home and raised three lovely daughters, Vicky, Holly and Marsha. When the time was right, Gail began her career as a kindergarten teacher with the Des Moines Public Schools for 20 years, until her retirement in 1983. After leaving the work force, Gail and Ray kept busy and happy by spending time with their family. Gail was a long-time member of First Christian Church, of which she was a volunteer for many activities catering to children from ages 5 to 12.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of nearly 70 years, Ray Jennings of Des Moines; three daughters, Vicky R. (Gene) Schafer of Dexter, IA, Holly J. (John) Clark of Des Moines and Marsha A. (Larry) Castagnoli of Clive; five grandchildren, Ryan Clark, Reilly (Michelle) Peterson, Cody Schafer, Tana Peterson and Brook (Charlie) Lenze; and her loving and devoted pet dog, “Tiger”. In addition to her parents, Gail was preceded into eternal life by her two brothers, Melford Bruce and Wayne Bruce; and two grandsons, Travis Schafer and Bradley Peterson.
In agreement with Gail’s wishes, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made in Gail Jennings’ name to either Animal Rescue League of Iowa or Drake University.
