Duane Edward Eberle, age 87, of Scranton, Iowa passed away on Friday, November 23, 2012, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa.

Born on December 3, 1924, at Lake Benton, Minnesota, Duane was the son of Elmer and Esther (Clayton) Eberle. Duane attended school in Scranton and graduated from Scranton High School in 1943. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. During World War II, he was stationed throughout the European Theater of Operations and received the Bronze Star as a member of the 315th Infantry 79th Division Company E. Upon his return to the United States, Duane worked with his father at their Mobile Gas station in Scranton. Following the death of his father in 1959, Duane and his brothers joined in owning and operating the station.

On August 9, 1984, Duane was united in marriage with Dorothy Patricia “Pat” Russell at the Central Christian Church in Scranton. They made their home in Scranton and Duane continued to operate the gas station until his retirement in the late 1980s.

Throughout the years, Duane was a member of the Scranton United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge and the Scranton Fire Department. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, caring for his lawn and garden, bowling with the VFW bowling team, playing cards at the VFW and dancing with Pat at Lake Robbins. He also collected Mobile Gas memorabilia. A highlight in Duane’s travels was taking the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the WWII Memorial, Vietnam War memorial and all the sites in September of 2010. They also enjoyed having tea every Friday with their special friends Raymond and Jean Cadwallader.

Duane is survived by his wife: Pat Eberle of Scranton; five children: Steve Eberle and wife Mary of Bedford, TX; Kathy Eberle of Kammapolis, North Carolina; Sarah Hardy and husband Mike of Des Moines; Laurel Eason and husband Phil of Bellevue, NE and Lydia Gabriel and husband Chad of Bellevue, NE; five step-children: Lynn Knight and husband Andy of LaVista, NE; Susan Russell of Boone; Gary Russell and wife Cindy of Boone; John Russell and wife Annette of Grand Junction and Jane Finch and husband Dale of Jefferson; Brothers and Sisters: Merle Eberle of Scranton; Louetta Plashek and husband Harry of Mims, FL; Phyllis Vollstedt of Manning; Ronald Eberle and wife Madge of Altoona and Gwen Register and husband Fred of Mims, FL; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Also special friends Raymond and Jean Cadwallader and Glenda Braland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Nadine Black and three brothers-in-law: Alvin Black, James Craigmile and Dean Vollstedt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Scranton with Pastor Julie Paulsen officiating. Friends may call after 10 AM on Tuesday at the Church in Scranton. Organist for the service will be Karen Murphy. Vocalist will be Debra Russell. Military rites are provided by the Scranton Veterans of Foreign Wars with Joe Eason as bugler. Cremation will follow services with burial in the Scranton Township Cemetery at a later date. Casket bearers will be Amos Eason, Joe Eason, Josh Eberle, John Eberle, Adam Russell, Jacob Russell, Andrew Russell, Chris Russell, Matthew Russell, Jerry Russell, Brad Wolf, Brian Wolf, Evan York and Ethan York.
