Although the holiday season is a joyous time of year for most, filled with Christmas treats and cheer, not everyone is always so fortunate to be able to provide a traditional Christmas dinner to his or her family.
That’s why area churches traditionally offer Simple Suppers on the last Monday of each month throughout the year. The holiday-time version of the Simple Supper is fittingly called Simple Supper Christmas Dinner and will be offered at Adventure Life Church on the evening of Dec. 16 from 5 – 7 p.m.
“Each month a different church or group organizes the Simple Supper,” says Julia Carmichael, office manager at Adventure Life Church. “The Christmas one is always a little more special and is organized by the deacons at our church.”
Although the supper is always hosted by Adventure Life, all of the churches come together to participate and help give the community the Christmas meal it deserves.
“We’ve been doing this for six or seven years now and have seen that the Christmas supper always has the most volunteers,” says Carmichael.
This shows the community wants to pull together to make this a special event for everyone.
“On average, 80 people attend the monthly dinner,” says Larry O’Connor, director of the Caring Hands Outreach Center and Food Pantry. “Last year the Christmas supper brought in more than 200 people for the celebration.”
There is definitely a need for donations. This Christmas, Caring Hands will be donating each of the turkeys that will be cooked by another Altoona church in the community that has yet to be determined. Surrounding churches of Altoona and Caring Hands will provide the rest of the feast.
“It takes a lot of people to put this dinner together, and so many people are always willing to come in to help serve,” says O’Connor.
