Make Way for the Holidays

Posted November 21, 2012 in Altoona, Community Featured

The holidays are poised to make another appearance. The Altoona Public Library can be both a place to prepare for the holiday season or a place of refuge from the hustle and bustle.

Snow is for sled dogs
Come to the Altoona Public Library for an up-close look at a sled and meet a real sled dog on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 3 p.m.  Trooper, the sled dog, would love to meet you, too.

Learn what goes into training and driving a team of dogs. There’s a lot more than just hooking them up to a sled and yelling “mush!”

Holiday closings
The library will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23. We’re closing at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21. We will re-open on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 9 a.m.

The library will also be closed Sunday, Dec. 23, Monday, Dec. 24 and Tuesday, Dec. 25.

We will close early Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve), at 3 p.m. and are closed for New Year’s Day.

If you wish to return your books on those days, you may use the drop located on the south side of the building.

Gingerbread house contest
Gingerbread houses are a staple of the Christmas holidays. Our popular gingerbread house contest is back. Rules, categories and submission forms will be available on Dec. 10. The entries will be on display in the library, and you can vote on your favorites.

We will accept contest submissions beginning Saturday, Dec. 15 through Friday, Dec. 21.

You may win an awesome prize. Go ahead and give it a try. You may be surprised at how well your gingerbread house turns out.

Dan Wardell visits
Everyone’s favorite celebrity from Iowa Public TV, Dan Wardell, will drop by at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27. Dan will have everyone involved, including the grownups.Pre-kindergarten to 8-year-olds are welcome to attend (as well as their parents).

Teen activities
We offer some creative ways for teens sixth grade and higher, to unwind as we head toward the Christmas holidays and semester tests. Attend “Teens Holiday Crafternoon” on Wednesday, Dec. 12 from 4:30 – 6 p.m., where you can learn how to make book-inspired books.

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, “Study Break for Teens” will give you a much-needed break from 6 – 8 p.m. Relax with some light refreshments.

On Friday, Dec. 28, learn how to create your favorite anime characters from 2 – 4 p.m.
