James Gates, age 90, of 503-19th Street, died at the Westhaven Community on November 17, 2012.
His body has been cremated and graveside services and burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in the spring.
There will be no visitation.
James was born in Boone on January 12, 1922, the son of James and Hazel (Maynard) Gates.
He graduated from Boone High School in 1940.
James served with the United States Coast Guard during World War II.
On November 19, 1949, James married Betty Brausey at Hiawatha, Kansas.
James was an electrician and worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 347 out of Des Moines. He retired in 1984.
James was a member of the Masons Mt. Olive Lodge #79 AF & AM.
He loved Ham Radio and spending time with his family.
James also enjoyed fishing, rock hunting and lapidary work, motorcycling especially off road, traveling, music, playing guitar, and attending Ham Radio Fests.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law Edward George.
James is survived by his wife Betty, a son Jim Gates, and a daughter Sue George, all of Boone, and several cousins.
