Carl Krohn

Carl Junior Krohn passed peacefully Monday night November 5, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, in the company of his wife and two of his sons.

Carl was born on July 29, 1928 and raised on the Century Farm homestead in Jasper County just outside of Prairie City.  He assisted working the farm and also worked at the Maytag Plant.  Carl and his father would often shoot skeet and trap at the local Gun Club.  After working heavy equipment construction in Des Moines and his marriage to Opal, Carl and his family moved to a farm near Greenfield that he ran for nearly ten years.  He often helped out his neighbors and enjoyed their company during various gatherings.  He worked in the local John Deere dealership in the off-season assembling equipment for the spring and fixing other equipment.  Carl and his family moved to West Des Moines in early 1970, where all four of his sons graduated from Valley High.  He drove a truck for Schwerman Trucking for many years, worked as a Security Guard and Driver, and operated Carl’s Lawn Service, his own lawn, garden and snow removal business.  He was an avid story-teller, some of which were actually true.  He was also an ardent John Deere Tractor memorabilia collector.  Carl and his wife Opal moved into Calvin Manor Assisted Living in Des Moines this past January, where Opal will continue to reside.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Beecher Krohn and Elizabeth Newell Krohn; his siblings, Robert and Lois (Carter); and his son, Thomas.  Carl is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Opal Huff Krohn of West Des Moines, IA; his sons, Wesley Charles Krohn (Julie Ann Krohn) of Newport News, VA, Douglas Lee Krohn of Duluth, GA, and Merle Dean Krohn (Jolene Jontz Krohn) of Fort Collins, CO; his grandsons, Brian Krohn of Richmond, VA, Edward Krohn of Newport News, VA, and Jonathan Krohn of New York City; and a handful of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 12:30-2 p.m., Saturday, November 10 at Merle Hay Funeral Home with the funeral at 2. Following cremation, he will be privately interred at Chapel Hill Gardens.
