William “Bill” H. Cram, 85, a life long resident of Des Moines’ east-side, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2012 at Bright Kavanagh House.
Bill was born on December 26, 1926, in Des Moines, the son of Russell and Elsie (Lamb) Cram, and graduated from East High School in 1944. Bill was a World War II Army veteran where he was a first sergeant stationed in the Philippines. Bill married his wife, Virginia L. (Wolfe) Cram on June 25, 1948, in Des Moines. He retired from the US Postal Service as the director of quality control, and served for a time as the President of local union #44. After retiring, he was a lobbyist for NARFE and an active member of the East-Gate Masonic Lodge, the Four-Mile Community Center, Sheridan Park United Methodist Church and East High School Alumni Association Class of 1944.
Bill enjoyed Canadian fishing, camping, his vegetable garden, Hawkeye sports, traveling with his grandchildren to Branson, Missouri, yearly trips to Las Vegas and the Iowa State Fair.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carl and Dale, and his wife of 60 years, Virginia. He is survived by his three children, Dr. Robert (Karen) Cram of Urbandale, Sharon (Bill) White of Des Moines, and Jody (Mike) Kasper of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Greg and Cindy (Merrell) Cram, Brian and Kristi White, and Ashley and Madison Kasper.
The family will receive friends from 5 -7:00p.m., Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Iles Funeral Homes – Grandview Park Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 8 at Sheridan Park United Methodist Church, located at East 41st street and Sheridan in Des Moines. Burial will follow at Avon Cemetery.
