Sunday Tradition

Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, roast beef and dinner rolls are just some of the items offered during the Sunday buffet at Larry’s Restaurant and Lounge.

Eating at Larry’s Restaurant and Lounge at 220 N. Wilson St. in Jefferson for Sunday buffet is like returning to a tradition.

Juicy friend chicken, real mashed potatoes and gravy, biscuits and gravy, ham, roast beef and dinner rolls are the main fare on the buffet table. A salad bar stands off to the side and includes tossed salad, a vegetable salad, cottage cheese, fruit, pea salad and dressings. One cart is dedicated to pies and cakes for dessert.

I knew I would never have room to sample all the different offerings, so I chose a breast of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, a lemonade to drink and chocolate cake with whipped cream and a cherry on top for desert. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, just the way traditional fried chicken should be. The potatoes were fluffy and delicious. And the chocolate cake was delightful. The other desert choices included cheesecake, another type of cake and raspberry pie.

Several couples arrived just as the doors to Larry’s were unlocked at 11 a.m. For $10 each, customers filled their plates as many times as they wanted. It is clear that taking in the Sunday buffet at Larry’s is truly a tradition for the numerous people who came in.

Larry’s Restaurant and Lounge has been open in Jefferson for 30 years, said owners Larry and Sharon Most. Sharon is the main cook.

Lots of the people coming in to eat came from church services. A second wave began entering about noon. Buffet is served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Sunday. Buffets are also served on special occasions, such as Mother’s Day.

Additionally, the restaurant is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. each week and serves a wide array of items, from scratch-made pizza to steaks, soups and burgers.  The salad bar is available on Friday and Saturday nights.

It is easy to see why Larry’s is particularly known for its fried chicken, but they are also known for the shrimp they serve. The menu has stayed the same for some time, Sharon said, but they are looking at making some changes, taking off a few of the items that are not as popular.
