Patricia “Pat” Rierson, age 87, of 1312 Doran Circle, died November 1, 2012, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Following Patricia’s wishes, her body has been cremated and no visitation or services will be held.
A private family inurnment of her cremains will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter next to her husband at a later date.
Pat was born in Perry on October 19, 1925, the daughter of Ewald Berglund and Elma (Reed) Berglund Steltzer.
She graduated from Boone High School in 1943, Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1945, and the University of Iowa in 1947 with a speech pathology degree.
On July 6, 1946, she married Walford M. “Bill” Rierson in Okoboji.
The couple owned the Holiday Coin Laundromat, Holiday House Gift Shop, and Johnny on the Spot Cleaners, all formerly in Boone.
After selling the businesses, Pat and Bill sold wholesale jewelry to retail stores for the Gerson Company of Kansas City.
Pat was a member of the Central Christian Church, P.E.O. Chapter JL, Picnic Club, Jr. Monday Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Delta Gamma Sorority, and she enjoyed volunteer work.
Pat enjoyed crafts and handwork, especially the art of Swedish weaving. She wove 32 throws for friends and family.
Pat also enjoyed reading, traveling, cooking, playing cards and computer games, and solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
She loved Okoboji and sailing and spent time there whenever she could.
Pat is preceded in death by her husband in 2000, her parents, and stepfather, Philip Steltzer.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Gragg and husband Kent of Polk City; her son Tom Rierson and wife Terri of Okoboji; grandchildren: Jeffrey Gragg and wife Nancy of Grimes and their children Jake, Luke, and Estella; Jeremy Rierson and wife Sondra of Carroll and their children Maggie and Henry, Stacie Rierson and Thomas Cohen of Excelsior, Minnesota; and Christopher Rierson and wife Abby of Lansing, Michigan, and their child, Maddex; a sister Doris Lytle of Lakewood, Colorado; a brother James Berglund and wife Mary of LaJolla, California; and nieces and nephews.
Pat’s wishes were that memorials be directed to the Eastern Star Masonic Home or Central Christian Church, both of Boone, or Homeward Hospice in Ames. They may be sent to Linda Gragg, 609 Eagle Way, Polk City, Iowa 50226.
