Norwalk Area Food Pantry, supported by area churches and housed at New Life Lutheran Church, 4380 Wakonda Drive, is open on Wednesday evenings from 5 – 7 p.m. allocating two to three bags of groceries to Warren County families in need. Families needing to arrange a different time are encouraged to call the church office at 515-285-5965.
Shirley Geyer has been helping organize the Norwalk Area Food Pantry for more than 15 years and has seen needs grow in the most recent years. Despite the economy, donations to the Norwalk Ministerial Organization program have not eased.
“The Norwalk Food Pantry is generously supported by area churches, businesses and people in the community,” says Geyer. “Plus, there are several people who work at least two days per week to sort the food and put it in bags to be handed out.”
Groceries and cash donations are accepted throughout the year, but there is often an increase during the holidays.
“Kids from the high school bring a boat that they’ve had filled with food,” says Geyer. “They call it ‘Float the Boat,’ and I don’t know how much food it holds, but it’s a lot. We can really use it this time of year.”
While non-perishable food items make up the bulk of donations, cash is also needed to purchase needed items that run low during the month.
Families in need must bring a photo I.D. as proof of residency in Warren County. People can receive groceries every other week, as the donated food must be allocated among all who are in need.
“We have had enough for everyone, but if families came every week, we would run out of food,” says Geyer. “We have more and more people coming; we are feeding 15 to 17 families per week now.”
Donations are accepted from all area churches and businesses. To make a donation of either food or cash, call New Life Lutheran Church in Lakewood at 515-285-5965. Information can also be found on the church website at www.newlifenorwalk.org.
