Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies are one of my standard go-to cookies, and when my daughter was having some friends over, it was the first thing she asked if I could make for them.

Sugar cookies are very simple, and you can usually count on the fact that you will have all the ingredients to make them in a pinch.  Some of you may doubt me about quick sugar cookies, but this recipe is quick to make, roll out and bake.

Sugar cookies can be as simple as you want or as elaborate as you can imagine. You can simply frost with a knife, you can frost with a piping bag and frosting tips, or you can you use royal icing to outline and then a quick glaze to fill in for a perfectly smooth frosting. I usually do the royal icing and  glaze frosting for the holidays because the glaze frosting is easy for my daughter to help with. I do the outlines and she fills in, kind of like a paint by number.

With just about any cookie you make you can always customize the flavor by changing the extract flavor you choose — vanilla, almond, lemon or even mint. I prefer a combination with vanilla and almond.
