Johnston, Iowa – The executive cabinet of Johnston Community Schools welcomed a new face to the district on Monday, October 29. Tom Mitchell has been selected as the new Executive Director of Human Resources for Johnston schools.
Mitchell is no stranger to Iowa schools and the human resources profession. For more than 35 years, Mitchell has worked with Area Education Agencies and public and parochial school districts as a school psychologist and supervisor. Most recently, he spent 11 years with Des Moines Public Schools as their director of human resources. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Graceland and a master’s degree in School Psychology from Western Illinois University. Mitchell also holds certifications and licensures in special education, administration, and evaluator approval.
In his role, Mitchell will oversee the recruitment and hiring of all district personnel; serve as the district’s equity coordinator and chair of the multi-cultural non-sexist committee; assume responsibility for certifications, renewals, accreditation, and licensing; administer mentor programs for new hires; and serve as Level 1 investigator for abuse and harassment issues. He fills the position formally held by Jim Casey, who left the district in early September for an opportunity with Des Moines Area Community College.
“Mr. Mitchell is a great asset to the Johnston Community School District,” said JCSD Superintendent Clay Guthmiller. “Tom has a wide variety of school experience which will serve the district well. Leadership is critical in attracting, hiring, and retaining competent and inspiring educators. We believe Mr. Mitchell will continue our strong tradition of providing quality staff and leaders for our students and schools.”
